Flying over Santa’s House

Today’s flight to the UK had the potential to be super interesting. Historically (well 30 years of post Soviet history since they opened their airspace) this flight tracked west across Russia, right across Europe and into Heathrow down the Thames.

However that changed with recent global events and that airspace is closed again so it’s added a few hours to the flight and now tracks east through the Bering Strait over northern Canada, down through Greenland, over Scotland and into London that way. I was excited that I would see lots of ice, look towards the North Pole, maybe see an iceberg or two…..

What did I see ? Fucking darkness. It’s fucking winter on the winter solstice and I saw fuck all. One of the disadvantages of travelling in the northern hemisphere winter I guess. I’ll have to do this trip one day in the northern summer.

Scott in the sky with Wifi

13+ hours to London, so I decided to spring for the inflight wifi. Such a super clear day leaving Tokyo, my best ever shot of Mt Fuji. Got to say I really rate Haneda as a transfer spot if heading to Europe. Even though we transited through to the “Land Side” of the airport JAL were able to store the luggage so we didn’t have to re-check it all in. Obviously if you do that you have to have a change of clothes in your carry on. Plane to London is a slightly older 777 but still lots of room. Also only about 50% full.

Coffee today : nothing spectacular, hotel included breakfast so it was just one of those machines, but way better than instant, so no complaints
